Job Description and Duties

This position is located at the DMV Headquarters in Sacramento.

Under the supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, the incumbent performs legal work in multiple areas of the law performing the following tasks that include, but are not limited to: perform legal research and write legal memorandums; provide oral or written advice to departmental management and staff; respond to legal correspondence; analyze legislative proposals impacting the department and its programs; work with departmental management and staff to draft and adopt regulations; analyze and respond to requests made under the California Public Records Act; review contracts and leases; review and respond to civil and criminal subpoenas; and review departmental documents for legal sufficiency. The incumbent may represent the department in lawsuits handled by the Attorney General, serving as a liaison between the department and the Attorney General, and assisting the Attorney General in responding to pleadings, conducting discovery, coordinating witnesses, obtaining information, and appearing as needed at mediations, arbitrations, settlements and court appearances. The incumbent may also represent the department in administrative cases before the Office of Administrative Hearings and State Personnel Board; or before courts in bond interpleader or collection cases. Please note, if an interview is scheduled, two professional writing samples will be required.

Working Conditions

Part-time telework available. Telework requires California residency. This position offers hybrid telework opportunities; however, telework arrangements are subject to change at any time based on State & departmental operational needs. Employees may be required to report to the office as necessary.

Works in an office setting with artificial lighting and temperature control. Primarily sedentary for extended periods of time; uses a computer and other common office equipment; participates in meetings.

Special Requirements
